Pop Music today

What is Pop music? Popular music, as its name suggests, is music that is release with the goal of getting wide appeal and have large audiences listen to it. It is understood to be commercially recorded and often driven towards the youth market. The songs are usually short and have catchy beats.  There is usually a high degree of production value to the songs, as on their own they may be lacking artistic qualities. Pop music tends to emphasis the production and recording of the music over a live performance. These novelty songs can come out of seemingly nowhere and captivate society and then once we get tired of them then quick disappear into irrelevance.  Anybody remember “Ice, Ice, Baby” by Vanilla Ice, “Rico Suave” by Gerardo or who could forget “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus?

  1. Emmanuel, I agree wiht you that Pop music does put emphasis on the production and recording of music over live performances. Songs such as "Achy Breaky Heart" were very catchy and had people all over singing and dancing to it. I have never been to a wedding reception where they did not play this song. However, I would not pay money for a ticket to see Billy Ray Cyrus sing this song in person. I believe these songs do stick in our brains though. Even though they seem irrelevant people do remember them and will always enjoy singing and dancing to them. This was a very good post. Mary Ann Reday.

  2. The novelty songs show a lack of respect from the artists' to the fans. Katy Perry's California Girls is the best example of a pop song recently. These Songs always arrive at the beginning of spring break and summer. I will admit that I have fallen for a few of these cheap antics myself, However, I know they are junk with a catchy tune when I enjoy them for the few amount of times I am able to stomach them.

  3. I totally argee with this post. Pop music of today only has catchy beats that get stuck in your head. Artist that sing pop eventually fade away like you already said. I like pop music but not all of it. I think the younger crowd of today likes pop the most because you can find this type of music where ever their is a crowd of younger people like at a club.

  4. i have to agree that pop music is just what it is, popular music. if i hear a song on the radio that i like and has a nice beat it will get stuck in my head. i think most people would agree with me. the song might have no meaning but has a beat of chorus that gets stuck in your head and that makes the song popular.

  5. One thing i see with Pop music, is that there is no meaning behind the lyrics most of the time. Pop is exactly what you said. They just want the sales, so they'll do a catchy beat or something. It's empty. Other types of music are more meaningful i think.
