As the Classical period came to an end in the early 1830’s a new age in music arrived. Western society was still establishing itself after the many social and political revolutions of the late 18th century. New social orders and ways of life and thought started to permeate to the general masses. The Romantic era lasted from approximately 1830 – 1900 and did not necessarily mean romantic love. The composers and musicians of the Romantic era continued to add depth and emotion to classical forms. They were intent on expressing personal emotions, feelings, and deeper truths in their music. The Opera genera also enjoyed much popularity. They continued to add depth and nationalistic tones. During this period Germany came to be the musical center of Europe. With the great German masters Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, and Johannes Brahms.
Below is the piece Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream by Felix Mendelssohn.
It's interesting to see how music changes and how new styles emerge depending on the time period. With the advancement of newer technologies, the art also changes with it. It is a way of people adapting to the new life styles of the 1800's.
ReplyDeleteAs time marches on we change and this is a good example of that. Music can be viewed as art, an art that constantly is being added to. It's amazing how people used to gather in opera houses and enjoy many songs together.
ReplyDeleteIt's neat looking back at how things have changed. Then we can see where we came from, and music has changed so much. Even now, there are many changes coming about in music and I'm one of those people who doesn't appreciate them. Now, don't get me wrong, there is a bunch of music that I like that's new, but when it comes to hip hop and rap, it all sucks. I bet the classical people in the 1800s didn't appreciate "old" music from the 1700s, and didn't like the "New" music in the later years. We all have our niche.
ReplyDeleteRomanticism symbolized the period after the French Revolution, which emphasized faith in the human inner spirit and emotions, and trusting of emotions. This showed clearly in the music and art pieces out of that period.
