The Renaissance Period

As Western Europe advanced out of the Middle Ages there was a great time for cultural awakening. The arts, language, and science flowered all across Europe. Sacred music began, for the first time, to break free of the confines of the Church.  Secular music began to thrive during this period and instrumental and dance music was also performed. Some of the great musicians of the period include Johannes Ockeghem, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, and William Byrd. The Renaissance period left us with a wide variety of instrumental music.

Below is the piece Fantasia I [a6] by William Byrd, performed by The Royal Wind Music.

  1. I found this video clip very interested and decided to do a search on what types of instruments were created during this time period. I believe that one of the instruments shown here is a The Dulcian. It produces a very nice sound, I would like to think much like our Oboe. Excellent article. Thanks.

  2. This is very interesting and gives a idea about how music was made and also what instruments they used to produce the music. The sound is something that is nice and sweet that would have been something that could represent the music of this age. The video is also and nice touch to give a look at what was used in early years.

  5. Emanuel, it is a very interesting post that gives an idea about music development in the Renaissance age. During this period of time, modern world was born since Christopher Columbus discovered America, Copernicus determined that the Earth rolls around the Sun, and Michelangelo and da Vinci created new forms of art. The awareness of humans was widening rapidly and people began to change their attitude towards Church. As a result, as you said in your article, the role of Church began to decrease gradually, and new forms of music appeared and new instruments also.
