The Baroque Age lasted from ca. 1600 – 1750. It saw composers rebelling against the prevalent styles of the Renaissance period. A major portion of what is considered classical music today first originated in the Baroque Age. It was also during this period that Opera was established as a music genre. Opera originated in Florence, Italy and some of the earliest opera masterpieces were composed by Claudio Manteverdi. The Baroque Age was so influential in music that almost all music compositions created later were judged against the great pieces of this age. This music is still widely performed and can easily be heard today. Some of the notable composers from The Baroque Age include Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, and George Frideric Handel.

I went to a Baroque age concert at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia a couple summers ago. It was really fun and the music was great. Really relaxing, but exciting all at once. I never went to a concert before this and never was particularly into classical music. I still don't have any on my iPod, but it was a fun social event. I think it's good to look back and appreciate the changes in music throughout the centuries.
ReplyDeleteThe music of the Baroque period is an example of music that was created out of rebellion. It was the musicians' reaction to the popular art of the time. I think that the best art is created out of this type of "rebellion," when artists are not satisfied with the existing art and they feel as if they are not being represented by it. Hiphop for example was created in this type of environment. -P.Maldonado
