Bone Flute

This instrument is called the vulture bone flute and it was found in a European cave. It has five holes and a v-neck mouth piece. Its about .3 inches wide and 13 inches long. Being that the fragments of the flutes are about 40,000 years-old, which is evidence that the humans had a strategic advantage over the Neanderthals.

  1. I will have to say when artifacts like this are found it gives a scene of where we came from. Our four fathers have develop the basic technology to get the point threw, and in this case, the music to play. Back in the old days people had to think about ways to make stuff and this is a perfect example or how they put there thoughts to work. also, just being able to find something this old and also such in great shape is incredible in my eyes.

  2. Well we sure have evolved from the old cavemen days of using a vulture's bone as an instrument. Like sports or food, musical instruments are a form of communication that we can share and relate to other foreign people, even if we may not understand each others languages or customs. Possibly this is how the cavemen communicated along with their grunting/rudimentary language?

  3. Ashley, this post was amazing. Flutes existed over 40,000 years ago. This shows how humans had a desire for music even back then. This is important information showing how humans evolved back in the caveman days and were able to invent things to communicate and entertain themselves. Thank you for the very interesting post. Music is another form of communication and knowing that cavemen had the understanding and ability to invent a musical instrument is truly amazing. 5. It's amazing that even cavemen used flutes. I'm with Alex with music being used for possible communication among our ancient ancestors, but to be more precise I think they might have used music to indicate feelings or possibly to just sit around the fire and maybe even have a flute-off.

  7. You would never think that cavemen would be able to make a flute out of the little resources they had. I think its great how we today are using the same general idea they did back then.

  8. This is very interesting. The idea of playing a flute with a bone is very advanced, even today. A bone to be used as a musical instrument seems very very creative.

  9. Ashley, this post gives me certain understanding about roots of music. Although everyone knows that music is an integral part of humans’ lives, many people cannot even imagine that the first musical instrument appeared 40, 000 years ago. In my opinion, music became one of the very important elements that contributed to greater and stronger societal organization, and the improvement of interrelation between the members of the primitive society. A bone flute is actually a very different beast from contemporary instruments; this gives an idea how technological innovations has been changing musical instruments and music with them though history.
